In Part 1 of this series on EVs, we established something critical:
EV growth in Northern Ireland is real. But confidence isn’t keeping pace.
So what’s actually holding consumers back?
The obvious barriers
Ask most people, and the answers are predictable:
- Charging infrastructure (25%)
- Cost and affordability (20%)
- Range concerns (13%)
These are the headline issues.
But they don’t tell the full story.
The insight
Our market intelligence white paper ‘The Confidence Gap’ based on first hand research and conversations with drivers in Northern Ireland goes deeper and reveals something more important:
These barriers are symptoms, not causes.
Underneath them sit three core drivers of hesitation:
- Confidence in infrastructure
- Non-users see charging as unreliable and risky
- Users rely on home charging and rarely worry day-to-day
Perception and reality are misaligned.
- Clarity on cost
- Upfront cost creates friction
- Public charging weakens the value story
- Savings only become clear after ownership
In other words:
The value is real, but not trusted.
- Trust in the system
This is the most overlooked and most important.
- Policy inconsistency has damaged credibility
- Incentives have appeared and disappeared
- Consumers don’t trust long-term direction
As the report highlights:
Trust, rather than lack of information, is the issue.
The behavioural reality
This leads to a critical shift in how we understand the market:
- People are not rejecting EVs
- They are postponing the decision
That distinction changes everything.
The commercial implication
If you misread hesitation, you misdiagnose the problem.
Which leads to:
- Over-investing in awareness
- Under-investing in reassurance
- Messaging that informs but doesn’t convert
Why consumer insight matters
Without consumer insight, you fix what’s visible. With it, you fix what actually matters. And in this market, what matters is confidence.
In Part 3 – Closing the Confidence Gap to Unlock Growth of this series, we look at how to overcome the confidence barrier and turn it into adoption.
